Detroit Engagement Photography at Michigan Central Station & the DIA

Detroit has no shortage of places that look great in engagement photos, but two of our favorites are Michigan Central Station and the Detroit Institute of Arts. We've photographed engagement sessions, wedding sessions, family photos, and headshots at both locations, and each one gives couples a completely different look while still offering an incredible amount of variety without requiring a long walk all over downtown.

If you're looking for Detroit engagement photography with beautiful architecture, a distinctly Detroit feel, and plenty of options for different photos, both Michigan Central and the DIA are excellent places to start.

Michigan Central Station Engagement Photography

Michigan Central Station is one of those Detroit landmarks that is hard to miss. The restored 1913 train station rises above the surrounding neighborhood with its grand Beaux-Arts architecture, towering windows, stonework, and distinctive details.

The building has had quite a story. After serving as one of Detroit's major transportation hubs, Michigan Central Station was eventually abandoned and sat vacant for decades. Its restoration has brought the building back to life and made it one of the city's most recognizable landmarks once again.

For us, that history is part of what makes photographing there so much fun.

We've photographed two particularly memorable engagement sessions at Michigan Central, including an engagement session for Maria and Jonah and another for Melanie and Jarrett. We also photographed a family session there and have done headshots for two different people at the station. One of our engagement sessions also included video, giving us the opportunity to create a save-the-date film alongside the photos.

A huge variety around one building

One of our favorite things about Michigan Central is how much you can get out of the exterior alone.

The architecture gives us opportunities to work with wide shots that show the entire station, tighter portraits that isolate architectural details, different angles, different focal lengths, and plenty of opportunities to change the look without traveling to another location.

The building also photographs beautifully around sunset. Because the front of the station faces northeast, the setting sun moves behind the building in the evening, often creating beautiful backlighting and a softer look around the architecture.

And while the station itself has a very grand, historic appearance, it doesn't have to make the photos feel overly formal. We can mix those classic architectural backgrounds with more relaxed portraits and candid moments to create a gallery that feels like you.

Michigan Central also gives couples something that is increasingly rare in downtown Detroit: you can spend a full engagement session in one concentrated area and still come away with a very diverse collection of images.

There may be events or other activities happening at Michigan Central, so we always recommend planning your session with the current schedule in mind.

Detroit Institute of Arts Engagement Photography

The Detroit Institute of Arts is another Detroit landmark that gives us an incredible amount to work with.

The museum's current Woodward Avenue building opened in 1927 and was designed by architect Paul Cret in the Beaux-Arts style. Its massive white-marble exterior, monumental entrance, arches, doors, stairs, and surrounding landscaping make the DIA one of the most recognizable architectural backdrops in Detroit.

We've photographed several sessions around the DIA, including engagement sessions and wedding portraits.

The famous staircase is an obvious must-have, but we don't want every photo to look like the photo before it. We like moving around the building and using the different architectural details, angles, greenery, doors, arches, and open areas around the property to create variety.

More than just the famous staircase

The staircase is popular for a reason, but it's only one part of what makes the DIA useful for photography.

The full exterior gives us a lot of different possibilities, and the combination of white stone, architectural lines, greenery, and open space creates a very different appearance from Michigan Central Station.

The DIA's brighter stone gives photos a clean, elegant feel, while Michigan Central's warmer, sandy-colored architecture creates a richer vintage look.

Lighting at the DIA can change dramatically depending on the conditions. The main staircase area faces east, so evening sessions can often avoid the harshest direct sunlight there, but we've found that there isn't one magic time of day. Sometimes direct sunlight looks incredible, and sometimes softer light is the better choice. We pay attention to what's actually happening with the light on the day of your session rather than forcing everything into a particular formula.

Just like Michigan Central, the DIA gives us enough variety to comfortably spend a full session in one area.

Michigan Central or the DIA?

Both locations are popular with Detroit photographers, and both have their own personality.

Michigan Central has a warm, historic, vintage character. The architecture feels grand and timeless, and the station's history gives the location an especially strong connection to Detroit. It's also a convenient choice if you don't want to spend your engagement session walking several blocks through downtown.

The DIA has a brighter, more formal architectural style. It's instantly recognizable, deeply connected to Detroit's cultural identity, and gives us the opportunity to work with the museum's monumental exterior, staircase, arches, doors, and surrounding greenery.

Both locations can give you a surprisingly diverse gallery without requiring you to constantly get in the car and move to another part of the city.

And if one location happens to be unusually crowded, an event is taking place, or something is obstructing the areas we'd normally use, that's not a problem. Detroit has plenty of other great photography locations nearby, and we're always prepared to adjust.

Detroit Engagement Photos That Feel Like Detroit

One of the things we love about photographing engagement sessions in Detroit is that you don't have to choose between beautiful photos and a location that actually feels connected to the city.

Michigan Central and the DIA both have decades of history behind them, but they also represent different sides of Detroit.

Michigan Central tells a story of transportation, industry, abandonment, restoration, and a new chapter for one of the city's most recognizable landmarks.

The DIA represents Detroit's long-standing cultural and artistic identity, with a monumental building that has been part of the city since the 1920s and a world-class collection inside.

For couples who want their engagement photos to feel polished, architectural, distinctly Detroit, and still personal, either location can give us plenty to work with.

And because we've actually photographed at both, we're not showing up for the first time and figuring it out alongside you. We already know the locations, know where we like to shoot, and know how to adapt when the light, crowds, or conditions aren't exactly what we expected.
