Packard Proving Grounds Weddings

If you're considering a wedding at Packard Proving Grounds in Shelby Township, Michigan, we can tell you from experience: that's a phenomenal choice of venue.

We've photographed and filmed six weddings at Packard Proving Grounds, including two in 2023, two in 2024, and two in 2025. After that many weddings, we've had the opportunity to work throughout essentially every part of the property, and Packard has consistently been one of our favorite places to create wedding photos and films.

There's something about this venue that makes every wedding feel different. The historic buildings, tree-lined boulevard, expansive grounds, classic Packard vehicles, beautiful natural light, and enormous amount of space give couples an incredible variety of settings without having to leave the property.

Why We Love Packard Proving Grounds for Weddings

Packard Proving Grounds is unlike a typical Michigan wedding venue.

The historic site was established by the Packard Motor Car Company and today encompasses 17 acres with multiple historic buildings, including the Lodge Garage and the 6,400-square-foot Repair Garage. The venue can accommodate large weddings while giving couples a huge amount of flexibility in how they use the property.

From a photography and videography perspective, that variety is a huge advantage.

There are beautiful backdrops everywhere.

We've photographed couples throughout the grounds, around the historic buildings, along the boulevard, and in and around the garages. Because everything is relatively close together, we can move from one setting to another quickly without spending a large portion of the wedding day traveling between locations.

And perhaps most importantly, the property is huge.

Even with a large wedding taking place, the grounds don't tend to feel crowded. Guests can spread out, explore the property, enjoy cocktail hour, visit the historic vehicles, and experience the venue without everyone being packed into one room.

For a wedding photographer and videographer, that gives us a lot to work with.

The Tree-Lined Boulevard at Sunset

If we had to pick one location at Packard Proving Grounds that we especially love for wedding portraits, it would be the tree-lined boulevard at sunset.

When the sun drops behind the trees, the entire boulevard can take on this beautiful backlit glow. It creates the kind of natural, cinematic light that makes for incredible wedding portraits and video.

It's one of those locations where the setting is doing a lot of the work for you.

The trees, long boulevard, historic surroundings, and warm backlight can create photographs that feel romantic and timeless without needing an elaborate setup.

And because the boulevard is right on the property, it can be incorporated into the wedding day without turning portraits into a major production.

A Venue With Incredible Natural Light

Another thing we've noticed after photographing six weddings at Packard Proving Grounds is just how well the property works photographically.

There are windows throughout the historic buildings, which means we're frequently able to take advantage of natural light rather than fighting against dark, enclosed spaces.

That matters more than people might realize.

Beautiful natural light gives us more flexibility throughout the wedding day, especially during getting ready, cocktail hour, portraits, and candid moments.

Combined with the historic architecture and variety of spaces, Packard gives us an enormous number of options for creating photographs that don't all look like they were taken in the same place.

Weddings at the Repair Garage

The Repair Garage is typically the primary reception space at Packard Proving Grounds. At approximately 6,400 square feet, it can accommodate up to 296 guests for a seated meal.

That size makes Packard particularly appealing for couples planning a larger wedding.

There's room to create a reception layout that works for the couple rather than forcing the wedding into a tight floor plan. The surrounding patio and courtyard areas can also give guests additional places to gather throughout the evening.

One interesting thing we've noticed as photographers is that the size of the venue gives guests a lot of freedom.

That's generally a positive thing, but there is one tradeoff.

Because guests have so much room to spread out, the dance floor can occasionally feel less crowded than it would at a smaller reception venue. Guests may be outside, visiting another part of the property, or exploring the historic vehicles instead of all staying around the dance floor.

For some couples, that's actually part of what makes Packard appealing. The wedding doesn't have to revolve around one room for the entire evening.

A Built-In Experience for Your Guests

One of the things that makes Packard Proving Grounds particularly memorable is that the property itself becomes part of the wedding experience.

Guests aren't simply sitting at tables in a reception hall.

They can explore the historic grounds and, depending on the event, experience the site's collection of classic Packard vehicles. The venue also offers historical tours that can be incorporated into events.

The official venue describes the site as a place where couples can create a wedding that is uniquely their own, with options to incorporate classic Packards into the event.

From our perspective, this creates something that feels classy, vintage, and even a little whimsical.

It's historic without feeling stuffy.

It's elegant without feeling overly formal.

And there's enough happening throughout the property that guests have things to see and do.

What Happens if it Rains?

One of the biggest advantages of Packard Proving Grounds is that an outdoor ceremony doesn't have to mean gambling on the weather.

Ceremonies are commonly held outdoors along the tree-lined boulevard, but the venue has the ability to move the ceremony indoors to the Lodge Garage if the weather doesn't cooperate. The Lodge Garage is approximately 1,600 square feet and can accommodate roughly 225 guests in a theater-style ceremony setup.

That kind of flexibility is important on a Michigan wedding day.

And from our experience, the layout of the property makes it relatively easy to move between different parts of the venue without turning a weather change into a complete logistical nightmare.

Who is Packard Proving Grounds Best For?

We think Packard Proving Grounds can work for a wide variety of couples, particularly those who want something different from a traditional hotel ballroom or country club.

It's especially well suited for couples who love:

  • Historic architecture

  • Vintage style

  • Classic automobiles

  • Industrial or architectural details

  • Large, spacious wedding venues

  • Outdoor wedding ceremonies

  • Lots of options for wedding portraits

  • A venue with personality and history

  • Giving guests something interesting to experience throughout the wedding

And while the property can accommodate different wedding sizes, we think Packard really shines for larger weddings.

If you're planning a 50-person intimate wedding, there are smaller venues that may make more sense. But if you're bringing together a large group of family and friends and want everyone to have room to breathe, Packard Proving Grounds is an excellent option.

Our Experience Photographing Weddings at Packard Proving Grounds

After six weddings at the venue, one thing stands out to us more than anything else:

Packard consistently produces beautiful wedding photographs and films.

We've worked at other venues multiple times where the results can vary significantly from wedding to wedding. At Packard, we've found the opposite.

Every wedding we've photographed and filmed there has given us an incredible amount to work with.

The combination of natural light, historic architecture, expansive grounds, the boulevard, classic vehicles, and the overall atmosphere gives us opportunities for creative portraits as well as candid moments throughout the entire wedding day.

It also helps that the property is easy to understand from a photographer's perspective. There are plenty of locations to use, but they're close enough together that we aren't wasting valuable wedding-day time getting from one place to another.

That's a big deal.

Your wedding day moves quickly. We want to spend that time creating photographs and films, not loading everyone into cars and driving across town to find another portrait location.

Our Verdict on Packard Proving Grounds

If you're considering Packard Proving Grounds for your wedding, our answer is simple:

That's a phenomenal choice of venue.

We've photographed six weddings there, and every single one has given us beautiful opportunities for photography and filmmaking.

The historic setting gives the venue character. The expansive grounds give your guests room to explore. The tree-lined boulevard creates an incredible portrait location at sunset. The natural light throughout the property is fantastic. And the combination of historic buildings, classic Packard vehicles, and outdoor spaces gives your wedding something that can't easily be recreated at a traditional venue.

For couples looking for a historic, elegant, vintage-inspired Michigan wedding venue with plenty of space and personality, Packard Proving Grounds deserves a serious look.

And if you're already booked there and looking for a wedding photographer and videographer who knows the property?

We've been there. Six times, actually.

We know where the light is, where the best portraits happen, how the property flows, and how to make the most of everything Packard Proving Grounds has to offer.
